IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS — EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2013

In addition to the knowledge gained through education, facility professionals in today’s world are required to meet more rigorous performance expectations in a rapidly evolving industry. To ensure the FMA designation represents these changing needs, BOMI International has made the following changes to the FMA designation curriculum, effective July 1, 2013.

Experience Requirement

Students who enroll in the FMA designation program on or after July 1, 2013 are required to demonstrate three years of verifiable facilities management experience or equivalent. The experience must be performed for a portfolio or building 50,000 square feet or larger. Work-related experience must include responsibility in 28 of the 41 criteria outlined in the FMA Experience Criteria Verification Form.

Please note: The FMA Experience Requirement will NOT apply to students currently enrolled in the FMA designation program, or to students who enroll before July 1, 2013. The FMA Experience Requirement ONLY applies to students who enroll in the FMA designation program on or after July 1, 2013.

Course Requirements

As of July 1, 2013, BOMI International will retire the Technologies for Facilities Management course as we develop new programs and course offerings that address this topic and others that are critical to operations in today’s industry. Given this change, the FMA designation program will now call for completion of six required courses (instead of seven) and two elective courses (previously one).

The new course structure for the FMA designation program is as follows:

Required Courses:

  • Environmental Health and Safety Issues
  • Ethics Is Good Business® ShortCourse™
  • Facilities Planning and Project Management
  • Fundamentals of Facilities Management
  • The Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Building Systems, Part I
  • The Design, Operation, and Maintenance of Building Systems, Part II

Elective Courses (choose two):

  • Asset Management
  • Managing the Organization
  • Real Estate Investment and Finance

Please note: The new course structure listed above applies to students who enroll in the FMA designation program on or after July 1, 2013. Students currently enrolled in the FMA designation program who have taken, or plan to take Technologies for Facilities Management before July 1, 2013, will still get credit for the course.
